Three Suspected Land Grabbers Were Arrested in Lagos

Published

on

Three suspected land grabbers, Igbokun Ogunkoya, 40, Ayoola Ahmed, 20 and Lateef Alase, 44 were arrested on Sunday August 14, at Alade village, Ikeja after they invaded and damaged a property. The suspects, however, denied the allegations claiming they were contracted by the owner of the property to excavate an abandoned foundation.
Ogunkoya claimed he was a registered contractor and had invited the other two to work for him after the owner of the property identified as one Abayomi, contracted him for the job.

“We are not land grabbers and we have never been. I am a contractor and I invited them to work for me. Ahmed was operating the tractor and Alase works for me. We started work there on Saturday. It was the owner, one Abayomi who gave us the job and that Saturday many policemen from the Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud (SARS) were on ground. We worked on Saturday and returned on Sunday to continue work. There were three policemen there with us still. It was while we were working that some policemen came and said we were land grabbers. That we were not authorised to do that work. They arrested the policemen with us that they were on illegal duty but since then, we have not seen the three policemen,” he said.

Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspects said the command will use them as examples against land grabbers.

“This is to demonstrate the command’s resolve to completely stamp out the madness of land grabbers. The law against land grabbing will be strictly enforced and the command will work in unison with the Taskforce established to contain the menace. The suspects will be arraigned in court.”

The shocking moment a suspected thief was tackled to the ground by a businessman on his lunch break, has been captured on camera in photos making the rounds online.

According to Metro UK, the flying tackle took place on Wednesday afternoon in Manchester city centre after a woman said £170 had been taken from her at an ATM.

Members of the public then held the suspect who is a 43-year-old man, against the ground while others called police to the scene.

Officers confirmed a suspect was arrested at the scene and later questioned on suspicion of theft. The victim is believed to have received her cash back.

One onlooker said: “I was just walking down the street when all hell suddenly broke loose. One guy was running full pelt whilst others were running behind him shouting: “Stop thief.” ‘He was then rugby tackled to the ground and pinned down.

“Some onlookers were going on about the guy’s human rights and calling for him to be let go but I’m guessing they didn’t know what was going in the run to it.

“The guy put up quite a struggle but he was no match for the others who grabbed him. It was like a scene from an old fashioned TV 1970s cop show.”

Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Shortly before 1.30pm today police were called to reports of a theft on Market Street in the city centre.

‘A man had taken money from a woman withdrawing cash and was then detained by members of the public.

‘A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft from the person of another and remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries into the full circumstances around this incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.’
