Racism: Davido Reveals What He Suffered In US College For Being Black

Published

David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has revealed that he suffered racism while going to school in the United States of America.

Davido, who is now a superstar Nigerian musician narrated that the experiences happened during his college days at Alabama in the United States.

The DMW boss who spoke during an interview with Recording Academy, organizers of the Grammy Awards, narrated that being black and living in a predominantly white community at that time, gave him the opportunity to understand how both parties think.

He said;

“It’s crazy, because I’m from both America and Africa, so I know how both sides think. I went to school in Alabama. I went to college at 15. I was very young. And Alabama was a predominantly white state.

“So being an African kid in a university where it’s 13% black people, it’s amazing. It’s not easy. I had to learn a lot of the things when I was like, “Yo, why you look at me like that?” And not even just being black, being African. They used to ask me questions like, “Yo, how’d you get to America?” I’m like, “What you mean? I came on a plane.” “Oh, y’all got airports?

The singer explained that most of what he narrated occured during the time he was a teenager of about 15 to 16 years.

“It’s crazy because like I said, I grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, this was when I was 15, 16, so I’ve always understood like, yo, this is going to happen. You know what I’m saying? Sometimes just because of the color of your skin, you might not get a lot of honesty from somebody. You feel me? So it was just crazy.

He however added that it’s both whites and blacks that need to make adjustments because at the end of the day, its not about the colour of anybody’s skin, but about humanity.

“The other way I look at it, we’re screaming Black Lives Matter, right? But we killing ourselves too. So the conversation is both sided, it goes both ways.”

Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, has called out his colleague Davido for allegedly giving him ‘bad advice’ during their recent dinner in the United States.

The ‘Zazu’ crooner claimed that Davido, who signed to Sony Music, advised him against joining the label, urging him to sign with Empire instead.

Portable alleged foul play, saying he is also aiming for a Grammy like Davido yet the DMW boss is asking him to join a label that might not influence the award for him.

Speaking during a recent Instagram Live session, Portable said: “You are signed to Sony Music, but you’re giving me bad advice in America to get signed to Empire and collect advance. The same Grammy you’re chasing is what I’m also chasing.”

The controversial singer stated that he prefers helpers who would help him genuinely and not listen to gossip or give him bad advice.

“Olamide helped me directly, Skepta gave me a verse, money, shoes, clothes and still linked me up with big fashion brands. That’s the kind of helper I want from God not someone who will be following mouth,” Portable said.
