Manchester United confirm the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager
Manchester United Appointed Rangnick as Interim Manager till End of Season
Ralf Rangnick has been named as Manchester United’s next temporary manager, according to the club.
Following the resignation of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this month, the Red Devils have been looking for a new head coach to help them get back on track after a poor run of five defeats in seven Premier League games.
While the club’s leadership conducted their managerial search, first-team coach Michael Carrick was put in charge on a caretaker basis and secured a hard-fought win against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night, as well as a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.
Rangnick, who was the head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow, is said to have the experience, tactical skill, and authority needed to rally a team in need of direction and confidence.
Rangnick will oversee the team until the conclusion of the season, when a new permanent head coach will be named, with all of United’s key targets already employed.
The primary options in the frame are Mauricio Pochettino of PSG and Erik ten Hag of Ajax, however United’s board immediately realized it would be incredibly difficult to appoint either manager in the middle of the season and will return in the summer.
Rangnick, on the other hand, made it plain during conversations that he intended to stay at Old Trafford for more than the next six months, and has been given a two-year consultant position once his temporary managership ends.
The German might take charge of the Premier League match against Arsenal on Thursday night, but that depends on if he obtains his working visa in time.
Rangnick has impacted the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, and is known as the “Godfather of Gegenpressing.”
He won the DFB-Pokal Cup with Schalke in 2011 – the same year they were knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals by United – and had a big impact on and off the field at RB Leipzig, where he oversaw promotion to the Bundesliga as manager before becoming director of football.
