Armed men suspected to be cultists have reportedly killed Gombe United defender Uzama Douglas.

Uzama was shot dead in Benin City on Thursday, Africanfootball.com reports.

The left back is a former Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles invitee.

The defender declared dead on arrival in hospital according to a close friend of the deceased.

“He was still on break in Benin City and was yet to resume for the new season,” the friend said.

“He went out with friends when some cult boys carried out an attack against them. He was shot and that was it.

“The killers fled and left my friend in cold blood.”

A top official at Gombe United said: The Gombe United family has learned with sadness of the untimely death of our defender Uzama Douglas.

“This is a sad loss to Uzama’s family, Gombe United and the nation.”

Uzama is the second footballer shot from the domestic football scene in the last three months after Shooting Stars central defender Izu Joseph was shot dead by soldiers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Gombe United FC on the death of their defender, Douglas Uzama.

Super Eagles defender, William Troost-Ekong, has revealed that he polished players’ shoes while he was a youth player in Tottenham Hotspur.

Troost-Ekong who now plays for Gent in Belgium, moved to Spurs amid interest from Liverpool and Manchester City.

During his time at the North London club, he was responsible for polishing Ledley King, Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson’s shoes.

“Tottenham Hotspur did everything to attract me,” Troost-Ekong told Elf Voetbal.

“They flew my mother to London to talk and even wanted to fly to Nigeria to look for my father. When I was there pretty quickly. They came to my school to arrange that I would rather have one day a week to train with older boys, and every day I would pick up a taxi.

“As youths we had to polish the shoes of the players of the first team. Everyone had that my teammate Harry Kane for example. I was responsible for the shoes of Ledley King, Younès Kaboul and Michael Dawson. Real charts at the time. Shoes I was brushing it off well, thanks to the boarding school. I thought finally be starting … haha.

“At first I thought to make it nice, but over time it became annoying. Because you would do it every day, only to go home when you brush the shoes had put in their lockers.

“If it was not good enough, you would be told to get the equipment manager. At Christmas, you ever received an envelope from the player whose shoes you had polished. As a thank you.”

The victorious Super Falcons of Nigeria who were crowned queens of Africa after beating Cameroon in the AWCON final have continued their protest at the nonpayment of their allowances and bonuses despite the assurances of the sports minister, Solomon Dalung. The girls have refused to leave their camp until they have been paid their dues.

On Thursday, Dalung held a meeting with the players, pleading that process to secure their entitlement was still on but his pleas yielded no success as the new African queens insisted they will only quit their Abuja hotel until they were paid. A Falcon star who spoke to Goal.com on condition of anonymity said: “We are not ready to leave the hotel. We have heard enough promises but all we want is for our entitlement to be paid.

“We’re not really happy with the way we’re treated. We are not even talking about getting reward yet.
“But a workman should be paid after his or her service but ours is not like that rather they speak to us in a manner like we don’t deserve to be paid.”
Another player insists their protest is not only about their unpaid bonuses, but the unfair treatment and poor attention to the women’s game in the country.
“We are not fighting for ourselves because of money, but for the future of women’s football in Nigeria.”

According to the NFF, the players are entitled to a $3,000 each for a win and $1,500 for a draw in the group stages, while victory in the semi-finals gives them another $4,000.

They will get another $5,000 each for defeating Cameroon in the continental showpiece’s final meaning each player will pocket $16, 500 each.

The Super Falcons are the latest victims of the NFF’s sloppiness when it comes to paying players. Earlier this year, the Women’s U17 and U20 teams were decamped with token N10,000 and N30,000 following their early exits from the Jordan 2016 Fifa u17 Women’s World Cup and Papua New Guinea 2016 U20 Women’s World Cup respectively.
